It consists of a trench filled with gravel or rock, a perforated pipe, and a geotextile fabric lining. Here’s how it typically works:

  1. Trench: A trench is dug to the desired depth and slope, usually sloping away from the area where water needs to be drained.

  2. Geotextile Fabric: A geotextile fabric lining is placed along the bottom and sides of the trench. This fabric allows water to pass through while preventing soil and debris from clogging the drain.

  3. Gravel or Rock: A layer of coarse gravel or rock is placed at the bottom of the trench. This layer provides a porous medium for water to flow through.

  4. Perforated Pipe: A perforated pipe, often made of PVC or flexible plastic, is laid on top of the gravel layer. The pipe has small holes or perforations along its length to allow water to enter.

  5. Additional Gravel: More gravel is added around and over the pipe to completely cover it. This additional gravel layer helps maintain the drainage capacity of the system.

  6. Geotextile Fabric Cover: The excess geotextile fabric is folded over the top layer of gravel. This cover prevents soil from entering the drain while still allowing water to filter through.
